Paper Squares 2026 — #001–#015

Paper Squares 2026 — #001–#015 is a series of fifteen works on paper. The square picture area provides a framework. Within it, broad swaths of color, linear marks, and rectangular shapes intersect. Blue and turquoise connect the sheets; black, off-white, and earthy tones shift the emphasis from work to work.

I’m interested in when these relationships coalesce into an image. A form can provide stability while simultaneously being interrupted by another mark. Some sheets are dense and dark; others allow for more light and movement. I discover the image as I work, rather than executing a preconceived idea.

Even within the shared formal framework, there are distinct differences: In #004, the movement flows more strongly outward from a dense center. #010 juxtaposes larger blue and turquoise blocks. #013 is calmer, with its lighter streaks and subdued contrasts. When placed side by side, the sheets make these differences particularly evident.

The paper remains visible as a whole. Its irregular edges, the light border, and the traces of color outside the picture area are part of the work. The square ends at a clear boundary; the image extends beyond it. The numbers #001 through #015 organize the series without dictating a narrative for the individual sheets.

“The square provides the frame. The image does not end at its edge.”
